South Korean wireless telecommunications operator SK Telecom is no alien to virtual reality and 360-degree technology having showcased its live broadcast platform ‘360 adaptive VR Live Streaming Platform’ (360 VR Live) at Mobile World Congress 2017. And going by its latest announcement, the corporate is prepared to debut “social virtual reality” at its 2018 Mobile World Congress booth next week. The demos will run from February 26 to March 1 in Barcelona, Spain. “oksusu Social VR” is its newest virtual reality platform which will gather users together to watch video content in a social space.
oksusu Social VR is an adaption of SK Telecom’s media platform service oksusu, with which, individuals from around the world can gather along in a virtual space so as to watch content as if they were within the same room together. According to SK Telecom, the experience would be reminiscent of an 80-inch HDTV in a virtual world. in the case of SK Telecom’s flagship, this could occur in a futuristic “sports bar” where dozens of avatars could sit around, mingle and converse whereas gazing up at the massive screen. The company additionally plans to extend this technology out to include other similar experiences in shopping, music sharing, and concert attendance.
The app offers an 80-inch full HD equivalent content viewpoint with SK telecom expecting an upgrade to image quality once the 5G era approaches enabling ultra-high-speed data transmission, equipped with capabilities to provide 8K(7,680 x 4,320) video content. In comparison, Oculus Rift resolution is 1,080 by 1,200 pixels and the HTC Vive delivers 2,880 by 1,600 pixels. This platform would grow into 8K headsets such as the still-in-development 8K Pimax VR headset. Other features include the ability to invite other users into the virtual space, thus allowing friends to share and watch the content together. For MWC 2018, the company has planned to showcase three totally different virtual spaces: League of Legends (LoL) contest, SM concert video, and SK Wyverns (baseball) match.
Taking the avatar construct a bit ahead, SK telecom has adapted its ‘T real Avatar __framework’ into the platform which produces lifelike mimicry of body movement for gestures as well as facial and emotional expressions., thus aiding immersion for others. The company additionally plans on adding more functions in the near future like appearance changes and other customizations. In a press statement, the company added, “Once the next-generation network, such as 5G, is applied to the VR platform, users will be able to enjoy high-resolution live streaming VR content in a real-time basis. SK Telecom has plans to commercialize oksusu Social VR and will expand the platform usage for commerce, advertisements, entertainment and other industries. However, the company has not given out any official statement about the same. As it does so, SpectraVR will let you know.
